The temp sender will give a zero gauge if it falls off. I can't tell if "left" is hot or cold in your case -- if hot, then check the wiring to the coolant level sensor at the expansion tank. Shorting that connection should make the system think there is coolant. If cold, then either the level-sensor as above or else the blinker circuit in the gauge itself, or the gauge is not getting enough voltage (needs 9.5-10.5v at the gauge).
