Caddo Lake is spectacular - the only natural lake in Texas. You'll be dealing with lots of mosquitoes since it's a swamp - but if you're from Houston, they won't be a surprise.

I'm in Austin and there are lots of great places close to here - Pedernales, Enchanted Rock, Colorado Bend, Bastrop, Lake Somerville. Then there's the mother of all parks - Big Bend (it qualifies since it's a day's drive...maybe not reasonable for some, but I've driven 40 hours straight so the term is relative).
