We have a similar thing here in Virginia Jay, it's called personal property tax.

I was so relieved when we moved here from California not to have to pay several hundred $$ on license plates based on the vehicle value.

Then we got the bill for personal property taxes on them which was actually a little more!!!

The governor is trying to repeal them some but at the expense of the state budget.
