Subject: scorpio wheels work great on my syncro!
Content-type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII"

well, syncro fans, i put on my set of merkur scorpio wheels (with bfg all terrain AT/KO 215/75R15 tires) last night.

i ended up using a 6.5 mm aluminum spacer, 5x112 bolt circle drilled to 14mm SAE, with center holes of 66.80 mm. the spacers fit as though they were stock (thanks, dave!). the original vanagon alloy lugnuts work fine, but the cone seats are smaller than the merkur seats. ben, any chance of me getting 15 more lugnuts for the scorpio rims from your other source?

the wheels fit all around with no rubbing or blocking. i can turn rack to rack and no bump, my sliding door opens with a finger's width clearance. the ride height is phenomenal, and even though it's about 2.4" difference i don't feel like i am going to tip over around corners. au contraire, the ride is much more stable and there's less swaying going around corners.

tonight i will take it to speed on the highway and see what it does, but so far i haven't felt like i've lost power. we'll see once it's loaded down...

thanks, ben tan, for the hookup to the rims, and to everyone else who chimed in about rims and spacers and offsets and all. hopefully we'll be at hollister for at least part of the day saturday or sunday, so people can see what these look like.

take care. bill '87 syncro westfalia http://www.scruznet.com/~kasper/pics/westy/ now riding with 15" rims and tires...
