To me this sounds like one of the following:

-out-of-round tire -detreading tire -out-of-balance wheel -bent driveshaft (which will also be also out-of-balance) -bent stubaxle (2WD rear, or Syncro either end)

Any of these can cause a violent shake if bad enough, and the only noise will be parts of the car bussing in harmony.
