Stan; I just replaced the upper ball joints for the same symptom. Check the boots. On my wife's 85 the driver side had NO lube left in it, totally dry! After removing it I could see a lot of slop had developed from metal to metal wear. Check it out, get it done. It could be dangerous otherwise.
