When I had my camper out in San Diego and even now in Upstate NY, I run the following.

Castrol GTX 20w-50 Mann/Mahle (VW OEM) Filter

I change the oil and filter at 2500-3000 miles depending how much highway driving was done.

I did run synthetic for a few oil changes, but could not justify the extra cost because it was getting dirty just as fast as the mineral based. Our motors are older and pollute the oil much more quickly than a newer motor, therefore needing more frequent changes of the oil to remove the contaminants.
