This subject is like the tire threads we see - there is no correct answer that everyone agrees on. Here is my two cents.

First off, I live in sunny / cloudy British Columbia where in the winter we hit -30C at times with the average between -10C and -20C. In the summer +20C to +25C is the average with temps going above +30C a few days. I use Castrol 15W40 that I buy in the 20L buckets as Costco with Bosch Filters. I change my oil every 5000KM or if I don't drive that vehicle as much at the change of every season. Some people go on about how Synthetic is better, I think they are right, but only to a fine point. Your oil still gets dirty - dino or synthetic. The Castrol oil at Costco meets all of VW specs. The only real exception to this for me is when we take a vehicle on a long road trip in the summer where I will put in thicker 20W50.
