| One other note on cross country driving -- I go to the VW of America site | and get the addresses and phone numbers of all the VW dealers in the major | cities I expect to be near (or travel through). This plus a Triple A | membership that will tow me 100 miles gives me some peace of mind.

I've got a VW publication listing all VW dealers in North America. Ask your local VW dealer for one. Also, carry a copy of vanagon.com's listee recommended repair shops. A rabbit's foot, a couple of four leaf clovers and a cell phone wouldn't hurt either.
