Well, I'm no metallurgist or anything, and I don't even play one on TV, but I've replaced several of the spring clamps on my '85 because they broke. Corrosion. They got scratched or something somewhere along the line and once the corrosion set in they eventually split in half. Noticed the coolant leaking past them near the expansion tank, went to give them a good squeeze, and they fell off. At least I was able to figure out where the coolant was coming from. The others still seem to be holding, but I've lost two of them. Probably be a good idea to go around and check them all for tension.
