Well, I wasn't going to post about this but as I am an ex-sears garage
flunkie I feel the need to . Back in 88-89 I was a senior in high school and
landed an easy gig in the sears garage at out local mall. They would hire
ANYONE that had their own tools. I was a real partyier as were most of the
other "tire and battery technicians" and the frequent fat doobie and a six
pack lunches were not uncommon. I saw parts broken and epoxyied back on,
stripped wheel studs go out the door, lug nuts impacted on so tight the
owners couldn't change the tire when it had a flat. The most memorable was
the crown victoria falling off a hoist. CRASH!! One guy I worked with always
had an eye on the car's stereos and when he found a nice one he wanted he
would get the address off the service ticket and the next day he'd have it
for sale. Looking into the ashtray and glove box was the first thing most of
the guys did when they got into the car to take it into the garage. The
service reps (sales guys) worked on commission and would "pad" the gullibles
for unneeded batteries and shocks and such. Half of the guys that worked
there were pretty good, the other half I wouldn't let take off my hubcaps.
Now I don't know if it was just that garage I worked at or what but needless
to say I haven't been near a Sears garage since.
