In 1989, I participated in an event sponsored by the Baltimore (MD) Bicycle Club called "Tour of the Amish Country." The trip included several different routes through this area in south central Pennsylvania where many Amish people practice a traditional fundamental lifestyle somewhat like what was seen in the movie "Witness" which starred Harrison Ford. That is what makes this area "famous." Imagine my surprise to be cycling along, passing people in horse-drawn buggies, etc. and discovering towns with names such as Blue Ball, Bird in Hand, and Intercourse. From these and other experiences, I can say that, as is often the case, whether you have to experience Blue Ball or Bird in Hand before getting to Intercourse depends on the approach you take.
