Great long weekend here in coastal BC... Loaded the family in the van and headed for Shelter Point Park on Texada Island. Parked right next to the beach with an awesome westerly view of the mountains on Vancouver Island. No cougars on the island to eat my kids. (This is a serious concern, here in Powell River they've been hanging around the schoolyards...) Cleanest washrooms I've ever seen. $16 cdn/per night is a little steep, but it seems all campsites are getting expensive.. Only about half full, and this is on one of the busiest camping week-ends in Canada! This is the type of place made for synchros. Lots of exploring to do on the island, mostly on dirt roads, some of them quite rough. (I'll come back with my Landcruiser.) Very laid back, almost like stepping back in time. Don't hike off the trail here however, as it is one of the key dope growing areas of British Columbia... Here's the catch, you can only get there by ferry from Powell River, and you can only get to Powell River by two ferries, unless you live on Vancouver Island. Anyway, if you're in the area it is worth the trip. Try www.roughlife.com for info on this area...
