I need some advice this time. My VANAGON, which was free, blew lots of blue smoke(blew blue smoke). so I took it apart. It looks surprisingly unworn except for the 3rd cylinder wall has a black area extending about 35 degrees horizontally and 1/2" vertically at the top of stroke and rear of the cylinder.

Does this mean the ring is not scraping there? What could have caused this? Overheating? Is this definitely what is causing the blue smoke? I have never seen a "burned" engine before, is that what this is? Nothing is obviously warped, but the head has the usual cracks between the valves (4 cracks). I have driven these amazing engines for years with these cracks there without a problem so should I worry about it?

Since the motorious is already out I will rebuild it regardless, but if the pump could cause the smoke I need to know now while it is out too.

Any input is appreciated, Thank you.

Gnarlodious
