Charlie, I replaced the water pump in my 84 westy about 3 years ago with pump from bus depot, $49 + shipping less list discount. Ask for two day shipping if you want it this week. Replace thermostat at same time. Its also a good time to replace those belts and hoses, do the hoses that are connected to the pump if they have not been changed. It will never be that easy again.

This was the hardest water pump replacement that I have ever done, mainly because you have to take everything off. On the 1.9 you need some socket drive metric allen wrench to get the air conditioner compressor off. Took me about 4 hours, but it was the hottest part of July and I had to do it in my office parking lot. This was the first time I had ever had a water pump catastrophically fail ( sheared shaft) with no warning. I was lucky enough to be almost within coasting distance of the office and got there before major temperature problems.

I think that there is a good article on "Tom's VW Page", http://volksweb.relitech.com/19wpump.htm. Tom continues to stay ahead of me in what breaks on his bus. Great resource.

Good luck.
