Oettinger makes an air to water intercooler for the Turbo Diesel = engines that VW put in the T3's. Is it still available? Does any one have it on there Vanagon? I have also heard that the other options for the intercooler are the = Audi 2.4L TD 5cyl. Also apparently there is a Saab intercooler that works as well. Any info on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

--------------- reply: I have used a german made cooler found on early 1980s Renualts in a Vanagon and several TD jettas. It's on the small side, but the inlet and outlet are placed correctly and its easy to fit in. The saab and audi coolers need repositioning (cutting and gluing) of the inlet and outlets to get them to fit. It's hard to glue the plastic. If you are want long term reliability and performance, get a custom cooler from Spearco or elsewhere.

Intercoolers on diesels are definitely worth it, no down side. Pressure drop was minimal. Temp drop between inlet and outlet was significant. EGT was lower by the equivalent temp drop. Gain in power was noticeable. You can turn up the fueling and boost.
