I put a '88-'91 instrument cluster in my '85. It went fairly easily -- I had to move several wires in the big connector. Putting an '85 in an '83 should be even easier -- all the connections should be the same. You will probably need to run a wire back to the coil for the tach but everything else should be the same. Mine had the green wire from the connector up but not the one back to the coil!?!

<< Hi all- I have a 83 Vanagon. The original dash had no tach, just a analog clock. I recently purchased a dash from an 85 Vanagon(thanks Alan!), this one has a factory tach. I want to take out the old non tach dash, and put in the newer dash from the 85 in my 83. Is this a plug and play deal? Will all the gauges work the same? Do I need to run extra wires for the new tach? Should I have researched this a little further before I Bought the new dash?? Brian 83 Urabus >>
