My water boxer has over 140 THOUSAND miles with no leaking problems. Besides, I'd rather have a rebuild water boxer with some performance improvements than a used Subaru engine. Last time I went to a junk yard I saw more Subarus than Vanagons. Sounds like someone should search out the Subaru List and see what their gripes are about their engines and transmissions. I'm still driving a really nice 83 Aircooled but I keep seeing these great looking Waserboxers waiting to be crushed because of dead engines. Stands to reason you could make a salvage yard a package offer to get everything you need to put a Waserboxer back on the road with a Subaru engine and come out cheaper than the VW rebuild route.
