"2 timing belts that are known to go before their time, leaky heads (Yes! Believe it or not!), expensive to repair, switching parts suppliers, my VW mechanic will not touch it, many mechanics refuse to work on conversions, you get reduced ground clearance, you end up with a red-headed step-child of a Vanagon and, most importantly, you bastardize a COLLECTIBLE VEHICLE. "

I gotta agree with you here. One of my favorite things to do is go down to the Vanagon Musy-em (aka Pick-yer-part) and look at all them Kollectabal Vanagons. Costs a buck to get in. Sometimes I help restore my own collection of wayward vannygons with parts from the musy-em.

It's funny, my mechanic will work on anything in my back yard. When I have time.

tim (impressed with all the Subavans I have seen) 1.) 1.9 with leaking from compression into waterjacket problem (20k) 2.) 1.9 with nursed along blown out sparkplug hole (milage unknown) 3.) 2.0 burning oil(milage unknown) 4.) 2.0 sitting with incorrectly rebuilt (DPO) bottom end (one tooth off cam to crank). (< 5k)
