Chris,

Some of the pushrod tubes on my first van rusted through and started to leak.
 When I went to redo them, I thought that the engine tin was designed by an
idiot because the tin seemed to form a natural scoop for road slush of the
salted variety.  I soon realized an idiot's hand had been on the tin, but it
was not the designer; someone had swapped the tin left for right.  In order
to accomplish this feat, they had to be very creative with a pair of
tinsnips.  Now for the point of all this: I, too, could not find replacement
tin, so I butt-welded patch pieces to the bastardized tin.  It took a bit of
accurate tin knocking, but it wasn't too bad.  In my case, since 2 of the
hangers had to be replaced, I silver soldered stainless steel straps to the
patches.  As far as I know, now a dozen years later, that tin is still
protecting the pushrod tubes.

If you can't find it, roll your own.
