It's the space you place the engine in. I would love to drive the van with the twin brother of the 22RE that powers my Toyota PU. Power, smooth, high reving, and will last a 1/4 million miles before needing the head pulled. BUT... that engine is too tall and might not like running continuously at the RPMs necessary with a stock transmission setup in my 84 van. The weight difference seems like it might make the bus a bit tail heavy. One of these days I would like to take a closer up look at RoadCow with it's Toy Auto conversion. I believe Ron used a smaller (1.8?) engine in it.

So, the Subie for the esthetics. For the time being, getting my 81 Westy on the road with a stock 2.0 is the next project.
