Subject: Parinoid Trip
Content-Type: text/plain

Well guys I've been following a multitude of list postings on both vanagon and the type2 list and have been getting really parinoid about my oil pressure.

I just returned from a round trip from Dallas TX to Galveston TX of about 320 miles in each direction.

Normal Highway traffic in Texas runs about 85 to 90 MPH (not kidding), the state just raised the legal highway speed limit to 75 MPH outside of major cities on the interstates.

I normally cruise about 70 to 75 in my 83 Westfalia without difficulty other than fighting an occasional headwind, then I slack off to about 65 to 70 depending on the severity of the opposing forces. I long ago discovered that these ricerocket drivers don't have a clue how fast you're going unless they actually get stuck behind you for a few miles. They often get stuck behind me because of highway lane close-downs in the summer months but these are 50 or 55 MPH speed zones anyway.

So just to satisify my curiosity I adapted my compression tester with a few brass fittings to check my oil pressure and I see that I'm idling at 850 RPM and about 18 PSI, at 3000 RPM i'm getting 55-65 PSI. These figures are free-running and not under load conditions.

Are these figures somewhat in the proper range?
