Most likely within the Speedo. Does your speedometer still clock the
speeds?
The odometer failure is a chronic problem with out beloved vans. It is
usually caused by slippage of a gear on a shaft in the speedometer
housing. It requires disassembly, locking the gear to the shaft somehow,
and re-assembly. It is a major PITA!!!! I cannot begin to tell you how
many speedo needle I have seen broken off when owners try to fix this. I
don't know about all models, but on my own van, the needle has to be
removed to be able to remove the speedo dial face to get into the gear
area. Without a watchmakers puller, it is at this point that most
needles are broken. And they are difficult to fix and impossible to find
new ones.
If you are able to fix the gear to the shaft, it's usually only
temporary. Because of this, I have set about to develop a permanent fix.
I've a watchmaker friend who hase all the tools, and together I hope we
will be able to find a permanent solution to the problem. Development
has been slow due to some diviations along the way, but we are working
on it.
Adam Puzerewski of this list graciously supplied an early model vanagon
speedo for us to work with. We need a late model speedo to cover the
newer machines, because the internal works of the two are very different
in the way they are constructed. If you or anyone else has one
available, would appreciate hearing from you off list.
For the moment I can't offer a simple fix, other than what I have told
you. Some of the other list members have had to deal with this so maybe
they can provide you with some more input.
Good luck.
