Subject: Does anyone rebuild air-cooled engines with increased
performance? If I want to tweak mine what should I do?
Content-Type: text/plain

Pokey's engine is doing fine right now (knock on Westfalia Arborite) compression is at manufacturers specifications: 130, 130, 125, 130. But I hope to keep her a very long time so if and when I need a rebuild I was hoping for more performance... without of course sacrificing reliability.

Are there and engine rebuilders out there that tweak the aircooled motor a bit? Boston Engine indicates that thier rebuids have "upgraded heads new seats, chrome stem valves, barrelspacers instead of the head gaskets and the con rods are notched to increase oil to the pistons to keep their temps lower reground oem cams new German lifters new cylinders and pistons all type 4 engines can be upgraded to two lyter hydraulic.". I confess to still being a novice mechanic so I have trouble knowing if any of this increase performance.

I had heard of a engine rebuilder by the name of Mark Stephens / MSHP who did but I is now out of business.

So if I when the time comes what performance mods should I make to my engine?
