you know, I suppose there could be any number of reasons for the clutch to chatter like that. Mine did exactly the same thing in my 89 syncro westy... from a dead stop into first or reverse... chattered like crazy... drove me nuts. Removed the center shaft (syncro only) and it got worse... lots worse. Transmission was growling too. Had to rebuild a cracked pinion gear in the tranny... put in a new clutch while we were at it. Chatter completely went away. Was it the gear or the clutch... or both? Beats me.
