Interesting Mark. If it gets to be more of a nuisance that will be something to try. Maybe they get hard spots just from being used for stopping the heavy van for 100k or more. Also I've was reading the post from 'malibu tony' about the timing. That timing light he has sounds pretty handy. I just have an older craftsman one without the advance capabilities. On my beetle I have a pulley with the degree markings on it so I can just increase the rpm and see the full advance. On my van I just raised the rpm and watched to be sure it was advancing using my timing light, couldn't see how much though. I'll have to mark it by hand someday. I have mine timed at 2 degrees atdc (stock is 5 atdc on the 83.5 to 85 ) and it runs fine, nice power and 18 mpg summer.
About another recent thread, I also bought a Ashcroft 0-60 psi pressure gauge via the web from Mcmaster-Carr supply company. Part # 4000K43. I work at a factory, so the shop was able to test it for accuracy and it came in 1 lb. low from 15-35#. So as soon as I get some adaptor fittings I'll test out my fuel pressure which I have never done yet.
