Subject: High and low pressure zones on a Vanagon - ideas for my
intercooler anyone!?

We finally have our 1.6 TD engine out of the Jetta and are prepping it for
installation into our 1984 Camper. I am intending on installing an air->air
intercooler to help boost the power and ease the fuel consumption.
My idea is mount the intercooler (what type I don't know yet) in the rear
left corner of the engine bay. The idea is to use the air vent on the
driver side as in input for cool air for the intercooler and for the air
intake - I may install a scoop of some sorts to help funnel it down there.
Then with some sheet metal I would built an air-tight enclosure that would
route the air from the vent area by the tail light to the back wall of the
van where I would drill some holes between the licence plate and the tail
light for the air to go out. This enclosure would also make sure that
warmer engine air will not heat up the intercooler.
My hopes are that the vent is a high pressure zone on the van that would
naturally want to force some air down the vent if it had a place to go. I
am also hoping that behind the van is a low pressure zone that would want to
suck the air from the opening that I created. Is there any way to verify
any of this before I start out on this project.
