Tony:

That's pretty interesting - I just picked up my 88 Westy from the body shop yesterday. I had been side-swiped a few weeks ago, and the shop told me the front passenger door needed to be either re-skinned or replaced. When I got it home I had to open and close that door for some reason and instead of the usual "PINNGG" sound -- it was more like "THUNK"! Now it make a little more sense :)
