My '85 and several others I've seen all seem to be taller than others, not sure why. Next to a friends diesel '83, it's noticeably higher, especially in the front, which I wouldn't mind so much if the rear matched, or at least sorta matched. Reminds me of my '78 with it's droopy tail. I'm also starting to get a very slight list to the port side, but not enough yet to worry about.

As a somewhat related story, a co-worker was bragging on his Heep (grand Cherokee) last week, saying how much he enjoyed looking over the "lesser cars" on the road (for him, nothing but a heep will do, really irritating). Being the quiet kind, I simply drove the westy in the next day and parked next to his heep. The top of my windshield was several inches above the top of his, and roof heights, well, it was no-contest in favor of the vw. Too funny. He seemed kinda quiet that day.

While discussing replacement springs, Steve Schwenk said in part:

The Lost Ranger Queries:

Do all '85s have taller springs? My Westy sits annoyingly high in the nose. I bought it from the original owner, and I'd assumed he put taller springs in the front. Maybe not. Any other '85s seem nose high.

I'd like to lower the front to level with (or slightly below) the rear. Any suggestions? I've thought of putting Carat springs all round. Anyone actually done this to a Westy? How did it work?

All civil input appreciated.

Jim Huskins
