Subject: rear end of van hotter than surface of sun
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII"

Hello,

I need some help (please!) finding the source of the following problem. My cat. converter and muffler run way too hot, but engine/coolant temps are fine. I experienced this problem once before, when the distributor cap cracked. Engine was running on 3 cylinders, and unburned fuel from dead cylinder was being exhausted into the converter, where it burned and got HOT. It was hot enough to heat up the rear of the van-too hot to touch. I have a similar heat problem this time, but I have ruled out bad cap, rotor, wires, etc. Perhaps some intermittent firing problem in one/all the cylinders, but van runs ok. Problem manifested after replacing fuel pump. Perhaps a suspect fuel pressure regulator? O2 sensor? Help! I don't want to melt my van!

TIA, Philip
