I thought that since diesel runs at no vacuum (compared to gasoline) the coolant does not even get sucked into the combustion chamber. On the contrary, leaky chamber will give you lots of exhaust going into the jacket (due to higher compression) which in a VANAGON bieng rear engined traps the gas preventing coolant circulation and causing chronic overheating. No, this is not leaking.
