My understanding is that any year vanagon tank will fit your 84, but I believe they made the filler neck connection to the tank bigger starting late in 84, meaning you might need a new, bigger filler neck if you get one of those.

As for source: www.busdepot.com will sell you an aftermarket tank coming from (I think) Veng (http://www.veng.dk/UKVersion/95/9557/parts.en.html) for about $160, and the dealer will sell you a new tank that you cannot afford. You can also try junkyards, or having yours rebuilt (which I did), or Chris (JordanVw@AOL.COM), or sell your van an Move On...
