I use my inspection mirror: I put it over the tail pipe and let a little of the fumes condense on the mirror and then give it the ol' digi-sniff.

Interesting! Cool, thanx for the info!

So how do you determine if the white smoke is caused by water or fuel?

Zoran,

Wrong answer----- Diesel fuel is oil.

I just got done installing new injectors in a 6-71 Detroit diesel that had hung up (filthy) injectors, and it was blowing white exhaust like a mosquito abatement vehicle.

It was blowing raw fuel out the exhaust which was burning on the way out of the hot exhaust pipe, hence the white smoke.

Bad injectors will cause this, besides the bad head seals.

A worn out engine will also blow white oil smoke until the pistons swell to close the gap between the cylinders.

See this all the time. ( Mack, Cummins, Detroit, Cat)
