On one and only one occasion, I was able to get a full tank of gas without spillage, using the automatic shut off feature of the pump. It was at a gas station I do not normally frequent. This leads me to believe your assertion that the trip sensors on conventional pumps don't like the internal geometry of the Vanagon fill spout for some reason.
