It is supposed to let the regulator diaphragm see atmospheric pressure. When the diaphragm starts leaking, it vents propane through the hole.

Yes. Marshall Brass 260 if you can find one (haven't been made for 5+ years now), 290 if you can't. 290 is longer, you'll have to massage the piping leading up into the van. Costs about $25 with excess-flow-preventing POL fitting installed (or you could use the one from your old regulator).

Under *no* circumstances use a BBQ-type single-stage regulator. Aside from being highly illegal and potentially deadly in an accident, it will likely give your refrigerator fits.
