I'm no physicist or anything, but it seems to me the turbulent air behind a
Semi trailer is more akin to a large rock in the middle of a strong flowing
stream.. As the water flows by the obstruction, there is a void formed
behind it and the water fills that void and actually flows back upstream.
Back in my younge foolish days when I would seek maximum gas mileage out of
my VW loaf vans( first a 71 and late a 79), I would edge ever closer to the
tail of the semi trailer until I was so close, that my van would actually be
pulled closer to the trailer bumper without any additional coaxing from the
throttle. didn't have to do that very many times to dig a little deeper for
gas money!!
I guess my point is that a Vortex is more conical and rotating whereas the
water or air filling in behind the obstruction doesn't really develop a set
flow pattern. The eddy(paddlers' name for the water behind the obstruction)
water behind the rock rather curls back upstream
