Subject: Vanagon Westy poptop seals : new design vs. old
Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII

OK, my new 88 Westy has the rusted, sagging seals on the poptop. My 89's PO had already changed the poptop seal, but I replaced the luggage rack's. I've seen the discussion on the merits in discussions last year and have no problem with new design.

Except one:

On the 89, the bulb isn't sealing so well. It is rolling away from the luggage rack and highway speed air forces through, making the poptop tent billow some, untucking itself. Though the 87's seal is rusted and sagging at the bottom on sides and back, the leading edge still looks good and appears to seal well. I'm thinking of just cutting the lower part off and replacing it, keeping the old one where it seals against the luggage rack. Anyone ever done this ?
