I did not know about the bypass details on the two filter types. That is good info to know, thanks.

The only reason I can see for bypassing the filter is to guarantee that a clogged filter will not prevent oil from getting to the engine. A completely clogged filter would have the oil pump relieving itself against the pressure relief valve, about 65 psi, with no oil going to the engine. Even dirty oil would be better than no oil!

The port that the oil pressure gage is tapped to is off of the camshaft, so I know that the engine has oil and pressure.

Probably the relief on the oil filter is to keep it in one piece, perhaps the diesel filter is a thicker wall. Anecdotal evidence is always suspect, but I have been doing this since I redid the engine 20K miles ago and I have no leakage. Well almost none, the motor has over 180k on the case.
