Subject: Caravana CARNET?
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

The following is excerpted from the Caravana PanAmerican post forwarded to the list on 6/17

CARNET: Our carnet served us very well everywhere. You > >do NOT need an official one for which you have to pay > >money but if you make your own, it has to look > >official with gold seals, ribbons, rubber stamps and > >such. Be sure and leave a big space for the border > >officials to sign their names...they like that. > >

OK. Am I the only one out there who doesn't know what a carnet is? Webster's unabridged and Encarta don't either. It sounds like a type of passport for the vehicle. Someone must know who is willing to answer what is admittedly a stupid sounding question.

BTW, I'm one who has adventured vicariously by reading the always fascinating posts from the caravana. Interestingly, some pics I saw showed the vehicles to be quite ordinary looking. I guess I expected bulli bars and other exotics devices bolted onto mostly syncros. Photos sent back showed at least one loaf that made it deep into South America.

Well, if I ever have the resources to plan and execute such an endeavor it sounds like I'll have to take a CARNET along. First, I need to know what one is.

Anybody?

Regards,

Fred 89 Westy
