Subject: Re: '91 Carat smog test results

Yesterday I posted smog test for our '91 Carat...I just dug up the numbers for the last smog test for my '93 Mercury Villager and noticed that the MAX allowable numbers HC were lower. I've included the Villager's results as the second set of numbers among the Carat's numbers below.

2500 rpm MAX allowable Average Measured Result HC ppm 0180/170 0020/0013 0024/0010 PASS/PASS CO % 1.00 00.10 0.00/0.00 PASS/PASS CO2 14.6/15.0 O2 0.2/0.0 RPM 2527/2471

IDLE RPM MAX allowable Average Measured Result HC ppm 0120/0100 0030/0017 0023/0022 PASS/PASS CO % 1.00 00.10/00.00 0.03/0.01 PASS/PASS CO2 14.3/15.0 O2 0.6/0.0 RPM 0890/0758

The Villager had 112K with plugs that hadn't been changed since 64K when the smog test was performed. BOTH vehicles use Mobil1 and are fed a diet of Chevron regular(87octane) with Techron(tm).

Offhand, I'd say that the engine management/emission controls on the Villager do a somewhat better job than the Carat's.
