The mysterious behavior of our beloved Vanagons... Though you were moving wires around in the engine compartment, the instrument problems sound unrelated and coincidental. I would look at the ribbon connector at the back of the instrument panel. This one connector carries all of the wires for the panel and is sort of a fragile connection. Best to yank the instrument panel to check this. Another thought. Are any other bulbs in your van out? Could your messing in the engine bay have temporarily shorted the alternator's voltage regulator? Could you have sent a high voltage spike through the whole system blowing weak bulbs and the temp guage? Just a thought. Hope you have a Bentley!
