Subject: removing overhead in a westy
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

HI all, I just ran into a problem with the overhead A/C cover in an '87 Westy that I found a novel solution to. It seemed that one of my stock speakers had went bad and was in desparate need of replacement. I looked through the Bently and the description for removing the housing was for an earlier westy and had not addressed the A/C unit model. Since the speaker was already shot, I took the aggressive direction and decided to remove it from the front without lowering the housing. The thought of removing a couple of hundred screws and fighting with the unit did not impress me. I found that with a little care, the front grill of the speaker could be "torn" form the rest of the speaker mount without doing any damage to the formica housing. I was careful not to damage the front in case I decided to glue it back together again and use in in the future. Like I said, with a little prying, it separated from the ring that holds it and I was able to remove it through the hole. I proceded to install the new speakers and within about 20 minutes, I had new speakers installed. The sacrifice of the one good speaker was well worth the time saved. Mark
