Rich, come on man, we are mostly adults here! (I'm questionable) The guy
made a Friday type post. The "drive" for reproduction the strongest force
on the planet at times, right up there with the primal instinct
survival. We can't change it. History shows people do wild things, bad
things, and concoct great schemes in furtherance of the urge. I cite the
cases of Helen of Troy, David of the Bible, In the matter of William
Jefferson Clinton, and now, Badassbus. From your inflamed response, you
were extremely offended. I was not. Why? Why do people view the same
thing in so many different ways? Did this listee act with the intent to
offend? Did he intend to be an: (insert derogatory comment)? Your writer
here KNOWS when he intends to be a jerk. Most people do. But this post --
could it have been an attempt to lighten up the group rather than be
offensive? For myself, when curiosity overcame me and I investigated, I
didn't really think much of it either way. I don't know why. It did not
offend me. It did not get make me burst out laughing -- but in some way it
was humorous to me that a porn movie was made in Vanagon. Maybe you say,
"that's sick." Who knows. But really and truly that's about all I
thought. Not that my opinion should control, I'm just reporting what I
observed. So I thought, probably Badassbus' hormones got out of whack, or
he thought it was funny. Funny, as in a different sort of "bucking
syndrome." <oops>
Did I have fair warning? You bet! The subject told me all I needed to
know. Perhaps those who felt otherwise thought he must have been kidding
and were shocked that he wasn't.
What happens if we attack all who see things differently than we do? Will
it make people more inhibited to post "the dumb question," or share
"different" views and ideas? (Different from who??) What would happen to
the discussions if there is a chill to the freedom of speech that we enjoy
on the list? To me, that freedom and openness is one of the primary
reasons I remain.
One final thought (aren't you glad!): The ever changing patchwork design
of this list community would not be nearly as beautiful and intriguing to
the beholder without the seldom seen and usually unexpected lightning and
fireworks, which you both have provided in your own way.
So I thank you both!
And I wish everyone a Happy Father's Day, a very special day to me -- both
as a son and in the last 3 years, a father.
