Spencer-
I put some Blaupunkt Component Car Speakers PCCI540 in to my Vanagon. (had
to stay German) It required a little bit of work, but the total install time
was about 3 hours.
The component speakers I punched holes in the little black speaker holders
simply by putting them face down on the carpet in the van and pressing
through the plastic with a flathead screw driver. These tweeters have a
"flush-mount" speaker holder which didn't even come close to hitting the
dash once installed.
The next thing was figuring out how to install the 5 1/4" speakers in the
lower part of the door. I simply took the time to measure how far the
opening in the steel frame of the door and then used the speaker holder as a
template to draw the approximate size of the hole. Next, I took my buck
knife and punched through the cardboard all the way around. The first hole
was set a little too high (about 3/4" of an inch) and so I simply cut down
on the door panel some more. The forgiving thing about all of this is that
the kick plate for the speakers is far larger than the actually hole that
you're cutting for them. If you over cut the card board- you're saved by
some extra plastic.
I'd recommend that you get the rubber speaker covers to prevent any water
from dripping in from the window and allow for longer use of the speakers
themselves. After I installed the speakers, I ran the wire through the
original black rubber boot 9one piece of wire at a time- and YES it was
hard) then under the carpet to the amp. (if you have a cd-player, or tape
deck it should have enough power for the component system- but I'd recommend
that you put a small amp just so that you can get better sound at 70mph on
the freeway!;)
the flush mount tweeters didn't sound very good to my picky ears so I took
them out and used the other mounts which placed them at a 45 degree angle to
the door (still without even coming close to the dash or bothered by the
window pull). it sounds great.
I'm actually thinking about installing the same speakers in the rear seat of
my van for a little more sound enjoyment of my passengers (yes- I actually
carry people in my van on a frequent basis). I'll let you know how that
install goes once I finally decide to do it.

When you look up front door speakers for an 85 Vanagon at the Crutchfied
site
there are 10-15 listed all with the "E-Z" installation guide. Previous
postings on this list indicate only a few choices for speakers in the stock
location and that cutting and chopping is necessary for them to fit. Has
anyone bought a set and was able to just "pop" them in with little or no
mods? That window crank is just a hairs width away from the speaker grills.
Also is the rear speakers in the Westy overhead A/C panel the same speaker
as
the front door panel? Thanks
Spencer
