I had the same problem with the passenger side expansion tank on my '83 diesel. There is an oval shaped ridge in the sheet metal that mates with a protrusion of the same shape on the back side of the expansion tank. Mine was glued in place by undercoating. Try prying the back side away from the sheet metal. The tank is sturdier than it looks. Mike Snow
