In this case, according to my mechanic, the discrepancy wasn't subtle. He said that when he lifted the car the wheel dropped visibly on the spindle.

I'm not really all that upset with the mechanic. As I said, they did me a favor and I'm grateful for that. Right now I'd just like to know how it was possible.
