The tank on my '80 rusted thru because of accumulated dirt. Tried about 3 different ways of patching it, but none of them lasted. Finally bought a replacement I believe that any gasoline leaking from bad grommets, etc. can wash away the rustproofing, so that then the tank rusts quickly.
