Adam, Until you hook the car up to a 1551/1552 Tool, you will run rough with a big flat spot around the rpm's you mentioned. Forget the dealer unless you have one with a tech who will think outside his little box. Try a smaller shop and tell them that this is set up just like a new 2.0L Golf,Jetta etc.... I downloaded the Motronic manual from Tiico's site just to give the Monkey lads with the 1551 one less excuse to not attempt this . Once you have access to this tool ,It erases any fault codes and then it sets the basic setting which should eliminate the rough spot . As for the Carbon can ,I have not plumbed it into the system yet. Where are you at? I have a program that emulates all the functions of the 1551 . I got tired of the glazed over eyes when the techs were presented with a Vanagon with a I-4 with a modern Motronic system. Now I just take care of it myself. If you are near maybe we can hook up. Good luck! Tom Czerniak

I fired it up, and it idles fine. When i bring it up to 2500 RPMs or so, the it begins to miss and sputter. Looking at the timing with a timing light, the timing appears to jump around when this happens. I double-checked all the connections, and didn't find anything loose or disconnected. I suspect the knock sensor, or the sensor on the cooling neck at the block, but have been unable to coordinate someone with a VAG1551/1552 to hook to it and look for fault codes. A call to our local dealer resulted in a resounding "Duh?" As they informed me that only Diesel Vanagons came with an inline engine..... typical..... Any thoughts? > > Also, how did you convertees hook up the charcoal cannister - one line goes to manifold vacuum, and one goes to throttle vacuum, but the throttle body is not tapped for a vacuum port.... > > Thanks for your assistance. > > > Adam Brooks > ------------------------ > '59 Euro Type 1 > '57 Euro Type 2 > '86 Westy Syncro (now Tiico'ed) > www.mindspring.com/~adambrooks/buspage.htm > (in bad need of update!) >
