I live in El Paso, TX. Similar outside temperatures. My 86 AC works very well. I have planned tinting the windows, but always seem to have other priorities for time and money. For several years I added about a pound and a half of freon every spring. Two summers back I converted to Freeze-12. I still have the leak, but it lasts all summer and Freeze-12 is cheaper and seems to work about the same as Freon.

Because of the large interior volume, it takes a while to cool it down. When the outside temperature is over 100, the inside temperature is cool enough to turn the AC down just about the time I pull into the driveway at home (about 20 minutes).

I have spent a lot of time going through the too many relays, wires that are too long, and way too many connections that are part of the AC system.

There were grounding and connection problems under my left rear side cover that were causing the compressor relay to overheat and cycle too often. I have had to drop the overhead tunnel and resplice the wiring harness from the front switches (in the overhead adjacent to your ear) because the inside blower would run but the compressor would not.

The local VW dealer had diagnosed the problem as a bad clutch and said I needed a new compressor.
