Brian,

I just used a bench grinder and gently held the angular surface on the side of it -- gingerly, too, I might add, since it got hot quickly -- and kept judging my progress by holding it against the nose of the van by the antenna hole until I couldn't see any light under it any more. Mine wasn't curved enough that a hacksaw would have been very effective. When it was finally flat it still wouldn't fit, and it was then that I figured out the some would have to come off the top, too -- again, gently and gingerly since there wasn't much there in the first place. I took about a 16th of an inch or less off that I'd guess. I could get the threads started then and the rest is history.
